The lower per-capita incomes found in industrial countries outside the USA may actually be because of, not in spite of, better quality of life resulting from a higher national priority on social, rather than private, goods. Of course it makes sense: GDP per capita is exactly a measure of private income. Still, it’s an intruiging thought, and yet another reason to forget GDP.
